FIRES.
About six o'clock on Sunday morning Mr P. J. Henley, of Leeston, discovered one of his large stacks of straw to be on fire. About ten yards distant were three large stacks of last year's oats, and not seeing his way clear to save these without assistance, Mr Henley drove to Leeston. The Fire Brigade, with their manual engine, were soon at the scene of the fire. Water was not over-plentiful, but the fire was confined to one stack of oats in addition to the straw stack. Plenty of willing hands being present, the stack was pulled down, and about half waß saved. There was no insurance. Mr Henley is at a loss to account for the fire.
