Rifle Association.
♦ [Pbr Pbess Association.] NAPIER, Jan. 19. Corporal Gardener, B Battery, Dunedin Artillery, the holder of last year's champion belt, was taken alarmingly ill last night with symptoms of typhoid. He was conveyed to the Hospital. He was ill when he left Dunedin, and gradually got worse on the journey. He spent a good night, and looked better this morning. It is a lovely day but oppressively hot, especially in the camp, which is in a very exposed position. The arrangements for the opening ceremony are left in the hands of the local Committee and they meet to-night. The Council also meets to-night, when the principal business will be the consideration of the proposal to allow competitors to count the value of their eighteen shots in their score. The exact number of competitors will not be known till the arrival of the southerners this evening. Captain Sommerville says that a permanent site must, in the interests of the Association and competitors alike, be fixed in close proximity.
