Ormond) SOO [FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] The sale of the Sylvia Park stud to-day drew a very large crowd, and the result far exceeded the most sanguine expectations. The only foreign visitor present wa3 Dr Eoss, who represented Mr J. B. Haggen, of San Francisco. Messrs W. E. Wilson and J. Crozier, of Viotoria, and Messrs T. T. Day and F. "W. Day, of Sydney, were the principal Australians present, and of New Zealand sportsmen Messrs Stead, Gollan, O'Brien, Butler, Douglas, Ormond, Fraser, Bathbone, Morrin and Major George were present. When Nordenfeldt was led into the ring, it was at once evident that the bidding* for his possession was to be of a very spirited character. The first bid was 4000gs, which it is understood came from the American quarter ; and in lOOgs bids the price rapidly rose to 5500g5, at which there was a slight pause, and, amid a dead silenco, sGoogs was bid, and there being no advance, the celebrated young sire went to Mr Samuel Hordern, of Eetford Park, New South Waleß, who was represented by Mr T. T. Day. It is understood that the Auckland syndicate went to 4500gs for the aon of Musket, but after tbat there were only two bidders, Messrs Crozier and Day, the former retiring at 5500g5. It iB recognised on all hands that Mr L. D. Nathan got a great bargain in St Leger at 400gs, and Mr Morrin also got Hotchkiss below his true value at 350gs. Mersey (dam of Carbine), who haß a beautiful chestnut colt by Nordenfeldt, gave riee to great competition. Starting at lOOOgs, the price travelled rapidly to 2000gs, which drew forth a round of applause. Mr W. E. Wilson then said " Two I thousand one hundred," which was im- j mediately capped by another hundred from Mr O'Brien, but Mr Wileon was not to be 1 denied, and at 23C0gs tbe great mare and j foal went to the " Silver King," and he also . got Nelly Moore (dsm of Lochiel) with a ' beautiful filly by Nordenfeldt, well within j her value at 470gs. Wood Nymph (full j Bister to Martini-Henry), who had a filly by j Ingomar at her side, was also secured by Mr Wilson at 500gs; and amidst a round j . of applause, Mr T. Morrin (the father of • the Auckland Stud Company) got Onyx (dam of Nordenfolt) with a colt by Ingomar, , at 300gs. Mr T. Morrin also purchased | old Sylvia, who has a filly by Ingomar, at i ' 125gs. When the yearlings came up for . ( discussion moderate prices ruled until the ! Nordenfeldt — Nelly Moore colt was led in, ; ! when the bidding became very spirited. . ' The Sydney division bid up very strongly, j but the Napier sportsman, Mr S. H. : | Gollan, would not be shaken off, and - at lOSOgs he got the colt. Ee is a beautiful brown, and taken greatly after his half-brother Lochiel. Tho syndicate and Mr Gollan had another ( tussle for the possession of the Nordenfeldt j *• — Florence M'Carthy colt, but again the j J ; New Zealander was victorious at 950gs. i ! Thia colt is by no means so good looking a j ' youngster as the . Nelly Moore colt, and j \ indeed is a very moderate looking !j ; customer. The Nordenfeldt— Sister Agnes j." also gave rise to great competition, J but here the Sydneyite3 stayed the longest, i and'at 810ga Mr T. T. Day got him. Mr | Stead got a beautiful dark bro.wn colt by '■ Nordenfeldt from Steppe at GlOgs. He isa . yery powerfully-built, ijw set youngster, i

and not a few think that the Canterbury sport got the pick of the bunch. The total amount* realised at tbe Sylvia Park Stud Company's sale to-day is 22,575 ga, made up as follows :— Sires, 6530gs j mares, 9408g5 ; yearlings, 6337g5. (There is somo discrepancy in these figures.)
