CORRESPONDENCE.
The following appeared in the Lyttelton Times this morning : — The Heatkcote Election. TO THE EDITOR. gi Hj — Kindly allow me space for a few lines in reply to a "Liberal of Fifteen Years," re arbitration. Our position is this : Mr Tanner was the first Liberal candidate in the field. He was brought out by a strong party representing all (sections of Liberalism. Funds have been subscribed to enable him to go to the poll. He had two splendid receptions (at Woolston and Phillipstown) before Mr Bussell declared his candidature. Now, Sir, the proposal to arbitrate came from Mr Russell. Why not from his Committee ? Presumably, because it did not exist; evidently, he had not keen able to form one. Tour correspondent attempts to draw comparisons unfavourably to Mr Tanner. Those who know Mr Tanner know also what value to put on his opinion. To those who do not know Mr Tanner, I would say, "Come to his meetings and hear the man for yourselves; be sure and come early or you may not be able to get in." I beg to say that, so far as I am concerned, this is the end of this arbitration correspondence, I having just as much right to announce my candidature for Ghristchurch, make a couple of speeches, receive what would be virtually two no-confi-dence motions, and then demandarbitration from the " United Liberal Three." What would the public think? I leave the answer to them. In conclusion, I would call upon the Liberal party in Heathcote to stand solid, refuse to be Bplit at the bidding of an "itinerant professional politician " and on Dec. 5 vote straight for Tanner.-! am, &0., Tuam streeti Linwood.
