"Canterbuby Times.— The Canterbury Times published this morning contains a full account of the people's day at the Agricultural Show, a review of the Metropolitan Race Meeting and particulars of the various events which marked the Carnival Week — the whole making up a seasonable budget for transmission by the English mail to-day. The tales, sketches and miscellaneous articles are of the usual high order of excellence, and readers will find their tastes consulted in every department. Police Court.— Two first offenders, charged with being drunk on the previous day, were dealt with in the usual lenient way. Druids' Gala. — A meeting of the Druids' Gala Committee will be held at the Druids' Hall on Friday evening, at eight o'clock. Ministerial Movements. — The Hon G. F. Richardson arrived from Wellington by the e.s: Takapuna this morning, and went South in the express. The Christchurch Mayoralty. — Mr S. Manning was nominated to-day as a candidate for the Mayoralty of Christchurch for the ensuing year. The Volunteers.— The E Battery did their volley and independent firing at Bromley at five o'clock this morning, under the supervision of Major Newall. Thirty men fired, and the figure of merit was — Volley firing, 13-26; independent firing, 15-4 C. The Richmond and Scottish Rifles will fire on Saturday afternoon. Lectube.— To-morrow evening, Mr H. O. Forbes, director of the Canterbury Museum, will lecture in St Mark's Schoolroom, Opawa, on " Incidents of Travel in New Guinea." The lecturer, who, no doubt, will relate personal experiences, will have his remarks illustrated by numerous lantern views. Accident. —Mr J. Manning, of the Barton Brewery, Rangiora, was rather severely bruised and shaken on Wednesday afternoon by being thrown from his trap in the Ashley river bed through his horse falling. Under the care of Dr Dowses he is doing well, and is expected to be about again in a few day*,
Ashley Coxtktt Council. — The election of two members on the above Council for the Mandeville and Rangiora Biding took place yesterday, and resulted in the return of Messrs A. Parsons and H. Blackett, who received 89 and 85 votes respectively. For Mr George Wallace, the only other candidate, 21 votes were recorded. The two gentlemen elected are in favour of the adoption of the Counties Act. Tlie secretary of the Prison Gate Mission desires to acknowledge, with mauy thanks, clothing for special case from Maadames Muy, Sbeppard, Asliu and Cramp ; also, donations of 2s 6d each from five friends for same case.
