CITY IMPROVEMENTS.
In the North-west corner of Cathedral square new offices and a warehouse are being erected for Mr E. W, Roper. The building ia of brick, faced with whita stone on that portion fronting on the square. It is of two storeys, and will be 33i't Gin iv hsight, covering a ground area of 50it by 85£t. On the ground floor are clerka' oiiioe, private office and warehouse, while on the upper floor are four roomy offices. Access to these latter offices is gained by a stairway from a separate entrance /.'icing Cathedral square. The whole building ia well lighted, and, when complettd, it will be a compact and wellSuianed structure in a part of the town which hus long been in need of such improvements. Mr F. Strouts i 3 the architect and Messi-B Jameson Bros, the builders.
Another new building in course of construction is the liuo house that .is now going up at the junction of Worcester street and Cambridge terrace, opposite the Canterbury Club. It is intended for the occupation of Dr Manning. The house is built in a style which is largely adopted for timber building in America, and when finished it will fill, with a handsome dwell-ing-huuse, a section that has been long conspicuously vacant. The frontages are decidedly efiective; a promenade balcony and a large bay window face the terrace. A tower facing Worcester street is utilised for the water-service tanks. The entrance at the foot of the tower will form an attractive feature of a rather elaborate and ornamental design. Tho house is of two storeys and coutains fifteen rooms with accessories and will be fitted up in the best style of a gentleman's residence. The doctor's professional apartments are separate from the rest of the building, and access is gained to them from the Worcester street frontage, while the private apartments are entered from the terrace. Mr J. Whitelaw is the architect, and he is certainly to be complimented upon his design.
