Cycling. — The fifty-mile road race handicap, held under the auspices of the Pioneer Bicycle Club, came off yesterday, over the Christchurch-Leeston road. There were thirteen entries, but owing to sickness only five competitors faced the starter. In addition to the Club prize of £3 3s, the captain, Mr Parker, genprously offered a trophy valued £3 3s, in the event of the record being broken. The race resulted in an easy win for W. J. S. Hayward, P.8.C., scr, 3hr 33min ; R. P. Clarkson, 8.T.C., lOmin, 4hr 2min, 2 ; E. E. Pitzhenry, B.T.C-, 6min, 4hr 15min, 3. The other starters were H. Wilson 7min, and L. Partridge lOmin. Hayward did not break the record of 3hr 32min, but hie performance was a good one, as the road was very rough in placeß. Should the weather keep fine no doubt Hayward will again attempt to break the record at an early date.
