~ • i THE CANTEiiBURT COUNCIL. The ordinary meeting of this Council was held on Saturday evening ; there were present about eighteen members, representing ten affiliated Societies, and Mr Parker (President) occupied the chair. A large amount of correspondence from all parts of the Province was laid upon the table and dealt with. The President reported upon an interview he had had (in company with the Secretary) with Mr Chapman, of Belfast. He had beeu courteously received by this gentleman, who had met him in a very friendly spirit. The dispute was in a fair way ot a satisfactory settlement, which he hoped to see concluded shortly. Mr Chapman had also expressed his wish to work his establishment amicably with the Society interested. The Secretary reported that some doubt had been thrown upon a statement made by the representative of Messrs Berry and Co., with regard to an advertisement over the signature of the firm. The statement referred to waß perfectly correct, and proved to be so. Under these circumstances, it was only fair to the firm th„t this should be made public. It was also reported by the President . that Messrs Whitcombe and Tombs' Com- | pany had refused to receive a deputation ; from the Council with regard to their ; dispute with the Typographical Society. ! A matter regarding the necessity of members of Unions affiliated with the Council joining other Associations, was brought under notice, and it was decided to communicate with those interested, with the view of effecting aa arrangement in these cases. The newly-formed Bakers' Association requested affiliation with the Council, and upon this being granted the delegate took his seat. Letters were received urging upon the Council the necessity of appointing a missionary to proceed to various parts of the Province, the expense therewith to be guaranteed. The matter was referred to the Missionary Committee, with power to take immediate Bteps to comply with the ■' requests. The Council, after dealing with other matters of a routine nature and passing accounts, adjourned until Saturday, May 3.
