Military Sports.

AUCKLAND, April 19,

The sports for the military, police and men of the permanent force, held under the Presidency of Lord Onslow, took place to-day, at the Tramway Company's grounds, Epsom. Beautiful weather prevailed, and there was a large attendance, including many from the country districts. The members of the Waiuku Cavalry, Pukekeho Mounted Infantry, Te Awamutu Cavalry and Wairoa Bifles arrived from the country last night and to-day, and took part in the sports, which were generally well-contested throughout. The cavalry horses did not prove expert jumpers. The programme contained seventeen items, including a Lloyd-Lindsay competition and Victoria Cross competition (in both of which prizes were presented by the Governor), Pursuing Eace for cavalry, Eescuing Match, Gun Drill by members of the A Battery of Artillery, tugs-of-war, foot races, &c. The Waiuku Cavalry won the Lloyd-Lindsay competition, thus winning the silver cup presented by Lord Onslow.

Toting Men's Christian Association. — At the monthly meeting of the Board of Management three members and seventeen associates were added to the roll. The late Mr Shaw having been a very valued member of the Association, it was resolved that a letter of condolence be forwarded to his family. The thanks of the Association were conveyed to Mr Stone for his kind donation of "Stone's Directory for 1890." The Secretary reported that the classes for the winter Eeason were in full operation, and well attended. The attendance at meetings and classes for the week was one hundred and eighty.

Cake and Apron Fair. — The Literary Institute at Geraldine ia to be congratulated on having so many lady friends to assist its funds by holding a cake and apron fair. This came off in the Volunteer Hall on Friday and Saturday. The refreshment stall was presided over by Mesdames Preston, Fish, Wilson-Smith and the Misses Fish (2), Preston (2) and Wilson - Smith. The apron stall by Meadames Poßtlethwaite, Webster and Hiskens and Miss Sargood. There was also a post office, worked by several young ladies, who were kept busily engaged in delivering numerous letters to those in the hall ; a shooting gallery, art gallery, and Punch and Judy show. The latter kept the youngsters full of mirth through Mr G. Kruse's drolleries. At intervals Mrs Webster and tbe Misses Fish played peveral selections on the piano, and Mr J. Ryan danced a sailor's and jockey hornpipe. The proceedings were enlivened by the strains of the Geraldine Brass Band, under the able leadership of Mr T. Sherratt. Owing to the first day being very wet, the fair was continued on Saturday, and the attendance being large, a capital business was transacted by the ladies who had charge of the stalls, &c, to whom the thanks of the Committee of Management of the Institute are due for the able manner in which all arrangements were carried out; not only so, but for the time they spent in preparing the fancy and useful articles. At a late hour on both evenings Mr H. B. Webster auctioned the gifts unsold, whereby the Institute netted a goodly sum.
