American Tariff". The Tariff Committee of Congress estimates that the proposed reductions in the Customs duties will amount to seven million dollars, and in the internal revenue to ten millions. It is improbable tbat tbe wool imports will be maintained. The object of the Bill is to check foreign imports, to promote tbe production at home, and diversify the industries of the country. The Marquis of Lothian is still regarded as his immediate successor. Tilbury Docks. The Orient Steamship Company, Sir Donald Currie and others are parleying for the purchase of tho Tilbury Docks, and they also hope, n the event of the purchase being completed, that they will be able to make special terms with the dock labourers. Gunboats for Africa. Orders bave been given for the construction of two gunboats suitable for the navigation of tbe Zambesi aud Shire rivers. Myra Kemble. Miss Myra Keinble's -matinee performance was successful. She has been offered a regular London engagement. Ocean Postage. The ingenuity with which Mr Goschen baa constructed bis Budget meets with general praise. Mr Goschen stated that the reduction of ocean postage to 2|d would cost .£105,000 for tbe complete year. Mr Raikee, Postmaster-General, will enter into negotiations on the subject witb tbe Colonial Agents- General immediately. In the Budget Mr Goschen puts the expenditure for last year at £86,083,000. A doubtful report has reached here to the effect tbat the French captured Whydah, and were afterwards attacked by Dahomans, who killed eight men and captured two guns. Tallow. — The market is weak. Fine mutton and good beef are worth respectively 24s 6d and 23s per cwt. Frozen Meat.— The mutton market ia quiet. Canterbury and Wellington mutton is wortb respectively 4|d and 4|d per lb. New Zealand beef, stocks are light, and the market is firmer.
