"Peat" candles are not made of peat, but of the paraffin that is distilled from peat in Brazil, where it is more plentiful even than in Ireland. According to the Comercio des Amasonas, John Grant and Co. are now having machinery installed at their works capable of producing eightytons of peat paraffin a month. They are also extracting from the turf a valuable lubricating oil. They employ three hundred workmen, and have thirty-three boiler 3, with purifiers, stills, and refrigerators in their plant.
