The Cathedral. — Yesterday Mr Wat te-e of Greyuiouth, a gentleman of considerable knowledge in rtgard to the erection of buildings in countries subject to earthquakes, inspected the Cathedral spire in order, it is understood, to report on 'the subject of repairing the apex of the structure. Trades and Labour Council. The adjourned meeting of delegates is to be held in the Foresters' Hall, Oxford terrace, to-morrow evening, at half-past seven. At its last sitting the Committee completed the drafling of rules, and the business for to-morrow's meeting is their final adoption by the delegates previous to being submitted to the various Unions interested. Ltttelton Regatta. — A Committee meeting of the Lyttelton Regatta will be held to-night, whe*i the programme will be definitely decided upon, and the prizemoney allotted. Sunday Lecture. — The second lecture of the Berie3 being delivered by the Rev C. H. Brf dbury is announced to be given in the Oddfellows' Chambers next Sunday afternoon. Last Sunday there was some inconvenience through the lack of seats, but thia will be remedied in future. North Canterbury Horticultural Society. — The Committee of thi6 Society held a meeting at the Woodend eehoolroom on "Wednesday evening, Mr James Judson in the chair. Letters were read from Messrs T. Turner and J. Donald to the effect that they would be pleased to act as judges at the spring show. A very satisfactory list of special prizes was then arranged, and other matters in connection with the show attended to, and the meeting terminated. Yaldhurst. — Tae annual meeting in connection with the snorts was held in the Talbot Hotel on Wednesday evening. There was a gocd attendance, and Mr Johnston was voted to the chair. It was resolved to hold the Bporta on Tuesday, Dec. 30, and a strong Committse was appointed to cavry out the necessary arraneeuieuLs. Messrs R. Frame and Sherwood were apoointed Judges, Mensrs W. md T. Gny Handicappers, and Messrs W. H. Taylor and Mayo, Treasurer and Secretary respectively. Bast Malvern. — An entertainment in connection with the Band of Hope wa3 held in fclie district schoolroom, Waddington, on Tuesday evening. Notwithstanding the unfavourable weather, there was a good attendance. Mr T. Adkins presided, and the programme was taken part in by the Revs J. Rapley and P. W. Jones, Messis G. Biadshaw, J. Weston, W. M. Mitchell, G. Gamble, E. Hight, T. P. Pole, R. Heighway and C. ltoberton, Mrs Jones, Misses Porter and Davis, and the school children. Salvation Army. — Thia evening the new forcics.3 in Battersea street, Sydenham, which ha 3 been erected on the site of the beiracks destroyed by fire lather more than a yenr ago, will he formally opened by Colonel Taylor, the liefid of the Army in New Zealand. Pioceedin^s will commence with a muster of forces in Cathedral square at seven o'clock, followed by a united uiHrch to Battursea street, when the building will be opened and dedicated. Colonel Tnylor will be supported by the whole of his staff, Adjutant Holdaway »nd the converted Maoriß, and Ceptains Wilson and M'Cormicfe, old Sydenham officers. The three city corp9, with their bands, will also assist. The ceremonies will be continued until noxtTuesday, when a tea meeting will close tue proceedings. Trinity Church Concert. — A very successful concert was given in Trinity Hull last evening in aid of the funds of the Congregational Union of Nee/ Zealand. Theve was a good audience, who showed by their frequent applause that they thoroughly enjoyed the entertainment. The first part consisted of the performance of J. Van Biee'B cantata, " St Cecilia's Day," in which the choruses were very creditably rendered by the choir of Trinity Uhu.ch, under the baton of Mr H. Johnson, Miss Freeman being pipnist, end Mr A. M. Owen accompanied on tLe haimonium. The principal soprano solos were taken by Miss Ada Sinclair 'J'aylor, whose ?weet vocalisation charmed her hearers. The second p?rt commenced with a pretty uleo, "Down in B'lowery Vale." Miss A. S. Taylor sang " Bid Me Discourse " with much expression, and was loudly applauded. A violin solo was well played by Mr Skelton. Miss Inglis sang "My Love is Come" very correctly, but she was heard to sonio disadvantage in following so accomplished a vocalist as Miss Taylor. Mr kf. Johnson gave "'Ti3 Jolly to Hunt," which won him applause, and this sor.g was followed by the trio "The Uawthorne in the Glade," by Miss Taylor and Messrs W. H. Roberts and H. Johnson. A glee well sung by the iboir, was the last item on the programme, and a pleasant evening was concluded by all joining in the National Anthem. Christchurch Amateur Swimming Club. — The first of thiß Clrb's monthly handicaps took place at the West Christchurch School yesterday evening. Mr A. Francis acted as handicapper. The following is the result of the 100 yds Handicap: — First heat : W.R. Sneddon,scr, 1; A. Duncan, 15sec, 2. Won easily by two yards. Time — 91sec. Second heat: H. Schwartz, lOsec, 1; A. Lorisson, llsec, 2 ; W. Bassett, 13sec, 3. Won after a tough race by two yerds nrt a half ; thud, three yards away. Time— 94isec. Third heat: A. Brabner, 14sec, 1 ; T. E. Merry, 16sec, 2; Dr Hacon, 20sec, retired. Won by two yards. Time — 92sec. Fourth heat: G. I'acon, lOaec, 1 ; J. Crummy 21sec, 2. C. H. Fox, 15scc, retired; C. H.Bowie, 18=ec, retired. Won very easily by five or six yards. Time — 83sec. Final heat : G. Tacon, 103 ec, 1 ; A. Brabner, 143 ec, 2 ; W. R. Sneddon, scr, 3 ; H. Schwartz, 163 ec, 4. Won with a little in hand by two yards ; third man taking place by the touch only. Time — 81sec. Brookside. — On Tuesday evening the members of the Good Templar Lodge, Pride of Brookside. assembled for the purpose of bidding farewell to four old and highlyesteemed members, Mr and Mrs G. Watson and Mr and Mrs A. Oliver. These about a fortnight ago entered into the bonds of matrimony, and aa they shortly intend to leave the district, to make new homes in the North Island, the members of the Lodge resolved that they should not take their departure from Brookside, until some tribute of respect had been accorded them. An excellent supper was provided, and the toast list incfuded " The Queen," "The Guests of the evening," "The Lodge," " The Order," " The Sisters," and " The Brothers." Recitations were given by Bvos Boag, Cunningham, T. Withell, W. M'Kay, W. Holland and G. Watson ; songs by Sisters Durey and M. Grainger, and Bros Lear and Cunningham ; and readings by Broa M'Laughlan and H. Holland. Social games of various kinda were indulged in until a late hour. The meeting was a decided success.
