The Ashforth Case.— With reference to a Wanganui telegram on the Ashforth case, Mr Jellicoe states that it is not correct to say that he refused to attend at the last moment. On Monday he received a telegram from the prosecutor saying he had cot the means to employ Mr Jellicoe, and if the latter acted for him it must he at Government expense. To this Mr Jellicoe replied, " If you do not get a satisfactory reply from the Justice Department, go before the Judge when he tabes his seat in the morning and explain the course the Grown Prosecutor took when you consulted him, read a copy of your letter to the Minister for Justice and ask what you are to do." To this he never received any answer. Scholarships.- Particulars have been advertised regarding the Somes' Scholarships to be competed for this year. They comprise six entrance Somes' Scholarships, two for boyß under fourteen, two for boys . under t^irteeo, and two for boya undertwelve years of age. ; and four Junior Somes' Scholarships, one value £18 a year for boyß under sixteen, one of £18 for boys under fifteen, one of £15 for boys urjaer,, fourteen> and one of £15 for boyaiundek thirteen.
