[Peb Pbess Association.] WANGANUI, Nov. 5. Rumours wero afloat last week that the Clerk of the Wanganui City Council and of the Mangawhero Road Board had been discovered to be deficient in the moneys-of both bodies. The Government Auditor, Mr O'Hara Smith, reported the matter ati once to the Audit Department, and also to the Chairmen of the Boards. The Chairmen of both bodies interviewed tho Clerk (A. Pilmer), and, on his pleading for time, agreed to allow him till Monday morning to pay up the deficiency. The County Council mot yesterday, when it waa afc once known that Eilruer was non est. All kinda of rumours are afloat. The Police got a telegram from Now Plymouth stating that the missing man had ridden into the town and gone on board the boat for ; Auckland, in order, it was supposed, to I catch the San PranciECO mail. Other rumours stated that Mliner, had been seen in town as late as yestsrclay ; but a3 the boat left New Plymouth on Sunday afternoon this was not, in view of the previous rumour, believed. It was generally supposed he had got away by the Auckland boat, though the police did not believe ifc possible. However, the County Council laid an information against him, believing it possible that Filmer had not got away. Thia evening a settler arrived iv town from the Mangamatu, and reported that he had seen and spoken to Eilmer this morning. Filmer had told him he was going to collect certain overdue rates. The police are working on the clue.
