i Thb Lincoln Election.— -Mr J. Ollivier has determined not to address the electors till after the issue of the writ for the election. Timaru Criminal Sessions. — His Honor Mr Justice Ward opens the criminal sittings of the Supreme Court at Timaru on Monday next. Railway Fire Brigade.— The Canterbury Fire Insurance Association haß sent a donation of £25 to the Railway Fire Brigade for their services at the Belfast fire. Sudden Death.— The death ib reported of a male child, seven days old, at Buskin street, Addington. The. child had been ailing several days, and died last night of convulsions. An inqueßt will probably be held. Mb Shannon's Appointment.— The Hon the Premier has written to Mr C. P. Hulbert to the effect that he will be happy to receive the deputation of soft goods importers, and will give ,Mr Hulbert due notice of when he may be expected in Christchurch. Trade Discounts.— lt has been arranged by. the importers here that the Committee who wait on the Premier on his return, relative to Mr Shannon's appointment, shall also discuss the question of trade discounts on Home invoices. Thb Belpast Fire. — It is satisfactory to learn that most of the men employed at the Belfast Freezing Works previous to the fire have been provided with work, in clearing away the debris, &c. Some of the butchers, who could not be so employed, have found occupation in connection with the boiling-down of the "salvage " sheep. Ferry Road Congregational Church. —The Rev C H. Bradbury, of the Congregational Church, Ferry road, has returned to Christchurch, and will resume his ordinary pulpit duties to-morrow. In the evening he is announced to preach a special sermon on " Christian Idolatry." Kaiapoi Rifles.— On Friday evening a good muster of the Kaiapoi Rifles paraded at the drill-hall, Kaiapoi, for inspection by Captain Whitefoord, after which the Company were put through manual exercise by Sergeant-Major Barrett. There was also a good muster of Cadets under Captain Alexander. The Culverden Sale op Sheep. — Messrs Miles and Co. (per Mr J. T. Ford) report having sold shorn wethers at Culverden yesterday as follows: — For Mr James M'Farlane, Acheron, 900 six and eighttooth, at ss ; 500 four-toothed, at 4s 10<3 ; 500 ditto, at 3s 9d. A line bf Kaiwarra wethers, comprising 1500 mixed ages and quality, was passed in. The Caledonian Sports. — Mr W. Boag has generously given three guineas to be divided amongst the competitors making the highest number of points in the events for boys at the Canterbury Caledonian Society's sports on Dec. 17. Various business firms have also promised to give cups and trophies as prizes for different events. Entries for the handicap races close at the Secretary's office, at 5 p.m. on Tuesday next. Rangiora Borough Schools. — The annual entertainment in aid of the prize fund of the above school, took place on Friday evening at the Institute Hall, and was well attenned. The programme was of a miscellaneous character, and all tbe performers, the principal portion of whom were school children, met with a good reception. The singing of the Masters A. and.JS. Gray, in character, and a dialogue between Mary Taylor and Bertie Cumberworth, were particularly amusing. MrH. Boyd, Chairman of the School Committee, presided. Land Sale.— Mr F. H. Pickering submitted several properties to auction this morning. Amongst these were two sections in Lichfield street and Bedford row, occupied by the Kaiapoi Woollen Factory and let to, them at £100 per annum. ( These we're passed in at £1225. Four other sections, open, were also submitted, but no efjef-'jwas received at auction. Au offer has since bean made. The land on which the building, lately used as a Catholic School^is situated, was then submitted, but there wan no offer made for the equity of redemption. A farm at the Styx, comprising nineteen and a half acres on Preston's road, also was put up to auction, but was withdrawn at £22 10s per acre. Metropolitan Temperance Hotel.— The management of this hotel has undergone another change to-day. Mr T. H. Pvitoheyhas very successfully superintended it for the last two years, during which time he has proved a most efficient manager, and has made a numerous clientelle. He was about to lease the hotel on his own account, but the arrangements have fallen through, as he found that the conditions imposed were more stringent than he was led to anticipate. He haß therefore given up charge of the hotel to Mr C. Klingenstein, who now acts as the proprietors' Manager. Mr and Mrs Ritchey, in leaving the hotel, carry with them . the regrets and good wishes of the present boarders, and the respect of the previous management. Anslzes' Society. — A general meeting of the Anglers' Society was held yesterday afternoon at Mr M'William's room, the President (Mr W. H. Spackman) in the chair. The following gentlemen were elected members of the Society.- — Messrs P. Cunningham, Hon J. T. Peacock, J. C. Boys, C. S. Howard, George Blair, Rev L. M. Isitt, Richard Maddock, W. B. Willock and Hugh Hepburn, Mr M'William gave notice of motion for next meeting to have Rule 7 amended to six, instead of ten, members to form a quorum. Mr Wallace moved, and Mr Buchanan seconded — ' ' That the sum of £5 be voted to Constable Donahue for the detection of poaching, and that any further movement in the matter be left in the hands of the President." Carried on the voices. A vote of thanks to the chair terminated the meeting. ""The Highland Crofters. — The Canterbury Caledonian Society has received a circular letter from the Caledonian Association at Townsville, Queensland, on the subject of the condition of the Highland crofters, stating that the Association has decided to take counsel withkindred Associations in Australasia as to whether any, and what, steps can be taken to ameliorate the same. Several of the members of the Townsville Association object to relief in the shape of money, on the ground that it would savour too much of charity, and have a demoralising effect on the recipients. Others do not think it right to offer inducements to the able-bodied section of the crofters to leave the country. The letter was read at the Directors' meeting yesterday, and it wa3 decided to call a special general meeting of the Society to consider the matter at an early date.
