MAGISTRATE'S COURT.
CHRISTCHURCH. ' This Day. j (Before E. Beetham, Esq., R.M.) Malicious Damage to Pbopebtt.-t Thomas Collins, a crippled old man, was charged with breaking a pane of glass valued at 255, on premises in Worcester strset, the property of the Charitable Aid Board. The proceedings were taken under " The Malicious Injuries to Property Act, 1867," Section 52. Mr Norris, Secretary to the Charitable Aid Board, said that the accused had been an inmate of the Old Men's Home at Ashburton, which place he left of his own accord. He turned up in Chrißtchurch, and came to the Board's office and demanded lodgings and food, and said that if this was not given him he would break a window. He was refused the demand, and then carried out his threat by breaking a plate- glass window with k stick. Owing to repeated misbehaviour aud breaking leave, the Mayor of Ashburton and the other authorities of the Old Men's Home refused to take him back. Accused said he came to attempt to rescue his daughter from the streets of the town, and her two children from shame. He was so shamefully treated at the Old Men's Home that he preferred to go to gaol. _ The only one who had anything to say with the management of the place was the Master, and he refused to listen to any complaints. The Magistrate cut short this tirade by saying that the charge of malicious injury was the only question they had to go into, and on that charge he would be sent to gaol for seven days. Alleged Assault. — George Osborne was charged with assaulting Ernest Pruden, a. Salvationist, in High street.
