THE MAYORALTY.

* Requisition to Mr C. Louisson. At noon to-day the following requisition, signed by 150 Christchurch ratepayers, was presented to his Worship the Mayor, asking him to accept nomination for a second year of office. A deputation, headed by Mr J. T. Matson, attended at the Municipal Council Chambers, and Mr Matson, as spokesman, addressed his Worship in the following terms :—- --"Mr _ Mayor, — The gentlemen accompanying me have been deputed by a large section of the ratepayers of this city to present to you upon their behalf this requisition, signed by all classes and interests, requesting you to accept the office of Chief Magistrate of Christohurch for a further term. Your past official career has won for you the appreciation of the citizens, and it is not in any way fulsome flattery to say your actions, adaptability to circumstances, your urbane manner, gift of perspicuity, and unobtrusive conduct in at all times trying to further the interests of all classes has universally caused those signing this request to adopt the attitude they now assume. We hope you will accept our request in the spirit that prompted it, and yield to the wishes of this city and become its Mayor and Chief Magistrate for another year. We will at once admit that the honour songht to be conferred on you is a high one, an honour which certainly has its responsibilities and its cares, bnt it is the highest honour and the greatest compliment tiie citizens of any city can pay to one who unselfishly and with zeal has tried to perform the duties pertaining to so important and responsible a position. Jn concluding these remarks we can only express a hope that the signs of returning, prosperity, which all now admit are visible, may be realised, and that yon, in yonr , short reign of ofiice, may witness the consummation of the hopes of all true New . Zealanders, that the past adversity shall be forgotten, and that our future happiness and prosperity shall date from this hour." The requisition reads as foUows-? — "To his Worship the Mayor of Christ- ( church, C. Louisson, Esq. Dear Sir,— We the . undersigned burgesses of the city of Christchurch, recognisingtheable manner in which you have discharged the important duties devolving upon you both. in your official i and social capacity as Chief Magistrate of this city, hereby respectfully request you ' to allow yourself to be nominated for the . position of Mayor * for the ensuing year. I The results of the past year*, nnder | your municipal rule, have been so entirely' [ satisfactory as to inspire us with fnll con- - fidence tbat, in your hands, onr interests 1 will be zealously and judiciously conserved. We therefore trust that you will accede to bur request ; and in the event of your _ doing so we pledge ourselves to use our j utmost endeavours to eectire your return."" j Mr Louisson, in reply to the requisition, , stated thathe considered theoffice of Mayor an annual one, and therefore had not intended to seek re-election. He had expressed this opinion before the members of the City Council, and now repeated that if an eligible citizen or a member of the City Council offered himself, not only would he (Mr Louisson) not oppose, bat he would, assist him all he could. As, however, no one had announced his intention of seeking the suffrages of the citizens, he (Mr Louisson) after hearing the very flattering remarks of Mr Matson, and receiving the linfluentially-signed requisition of the citizens, felt it would.be "iiLljtfi'Hiii iil.lHii In
