I .___ +. _ Death at the Hospital. — Henry Drew, who was seized with a fit in Salisbury street on Wednesday morning and removed by the police to the Hospital, died in that institution at eleven o'clock last night. Personal. — Mr H. Bedwood has come to Christchnrch for the carnival week, and taken up hia quarters, at the White Hart Hotel. The veteran Bportsman, as his many friends will be glad to know, is looking extremely well. Death at Lyttelton.— On the passage of the steamship Arawa from Wellington to Lyttelton on Thursday night, a fireman named Thomas Farrell fell and hurt his spine. Yesterday evening he was conveyed to the Lyttelton Ward, and there attended by the ship's surgeon and Dr Guthrie. They were unable to do anything for the poor fellow, and he died this morning. A Nabbow Escape. — A youngster named Bishop narrowly escaped being drowned in Lyttelton this morning. He was fishing on the watermen's steps, and overbalancing himself fell into the water. He was got out by two men who happened to witness the affair, otherwise his chance would have been small indeed as the steps at the place are very high. The Owen Silver Lode. — A letter has been received from the Mining Manager of the Welcome Silver Mining Company, stating that during the week the tunnel has been' driven a further depth of 13ft, making the total depth 3Sft. Some pieces of ore showing good silver have been found. The prospects of the mine are considered satisfactory. Masonic. — The regular monthly meeting of the Lodge of Unanimity, No. 60-i, Lyttelton, i was held at their Lodge-room on Thursday evening last, when a large gathering of members and vieitiDg brethren took place. After dealing with the correspondence, one candidate was admitted to the M.M.'s degree. After dealing with other business, the Lodge was duly closed, when the brethren adjourned to the supper-room, where the usual loyal and Masonic .toasts were honoured. The Dog Show.— Entries for the Interprovincial Dog Show are coming in very freely- Amongthe animals exhibited will be representatives from Wellington, Nelson, Dunedin, and South Canterbury. The fox terriers will, as usual, be a most prominent feature of the Show. The art union tickets are going off satisfactorily, The entries close at 9 p.m. on Wednesday next, and on Tuesday evening a meeting of the Committee will be held at the Commercial Hotel, for the purpose of allocating the special prizes. ' Bast Belt Improvement Association. — An interesting debate was carried on by the members of the East' Belt Improvement Association on Thursday evening on the subject, "Is Phrenology a True Science?" in which Messrs Mason and J. L. Wilson were the leaders. Considerable discussion wa3 indulged in by the members present. The meeting' was presided over by Mr Howard. This was the last business meeting of the Association for this year. ' The' session will be brought to a close with a "social" on Nov. 8. A'' Landmark Gone. — This morning the old building that has done duty as a stable | to the Mitre Hotel, Lyttelton, collapsed. It is stated that the structure is almost forty years old, and is probably one of the oldest buildings in the place. It survived the fire which destroyed the Mitre Hotel some years ago, and has managed to keep upright through the numerous Nor'-west galeß that have swept over the town. It fell down bodily shortly after six o'clock this morning, and there was not a breath of wind at the time. Fortunately, no accident resulted, as the place was unoccupied either by man or horse.
