The coM- -: 'blooded pnbEc axe apt to give-* man with a grievance the colcU-hcidS-r, and to care less than the colloquial ""-two straws*" aboufcthe wordihg of an. article. They wiH go on the broad .facts, and the broad facts, are these : The Bank of New Zealand has paid a dividend of 7 per.cent, . and could have paid more bnt for the Directors' wise determination to- carry forward more than half the amount of nearly £60,000 available for operating on. Further, this has been done after the most heroic remedies have been applied to set the Bank's business on a sonnd basis; after a sacrifice of capital, a cleaning up and setting straight which justifies Sir Frederick Whitaker'e boasfettat hardly
another institution would have stood it. But though the general public are prose to rely on the broad facts, they are also peculiarly alive to general impressions. While they will feel that the first banking .institution in the Colony has survived Vhat Mr Buckley and Sir Frederick, with no exaggeration, call an " ordeal " of the moat fiery nature, and is once more on the high road to prosperity. They will look on it, too,, as a high road on which the journey - will be safer, if not made with such startling' rapidity as in days gone by; but they* willibear in mind an outline of that speech of "Mr Beader Wood. Though they may forgot his phrases, they will remember his idea of the reports of the past, and be kemnly critical of them ia the future. Frora this we believe that nothing but good Swill oome. The exact truth, and no rose- tinting, in the f utnre will do the Bank o£ New Zealand itself anything but harm. And wiate ver favourably affects the business, the stability, and the position of that Bank will be reflected in the business of the^jountry.
