The Maoris in Melbourne. [Special to Press Association.] MELi'OUBNE, Anacsr 11. "Warbrick's Native football team played a match this afternoon against a Melbourne Fifteen under the Rugby Union rules. The weather was fine, and it is estimated that fully ten thousand spectators were present. In the first spell the Native team had the besfc of the play, and had the local team pressed in their twenty-five most of the time. There was no score in tbia spell, but the Natives were forced down on one occasion. In the second spell, the visitors played with greafc dash, and P. ICeogh, " Smiler," and H. Lac each obtained a try, none of which, however, were converted. The game resulted in a win for the Native team by three trios to nil. SYDNEY. August 12. The English football team played a match against the Sydnoy University yesterday, and won by eight points to four. [Per Pbess Association.] AUCKLAND, August 11. The football match between Auckland representatives and a representative team from Thames, was played to-day at the Tramway Company's Grounds, Epsom, and resulted in a win tor Auckland by fifteen points to three. The Auckland forwards were too strong for their opponents, who wero much lighter, and the local players ; were thus enabled to hold the scrimmages j and givo their backs a chance to paBS, j which they used to advantage, Braund j doing good work in this respect. Mackie I played a fine game, making some good runs j and just missing scoring on several I occasions. Tarfield was also in good form, and Stephenson and Masefield wera very conspicuous. Crowe, Lecky, and Hobson showed the best form amongst the Auckland forwards. Of tbe Thames players, Poland, Jordan, M'Gregor, and Moroney did fine work, bufc the full-back, Buchanan, waa poor. Amongst the forwards, Brownlee, H'Nike, and Watene were best. The visiting team were entertained at a dinner this evening. WELLINGTON, August 12. At Newtown yesterday the weather was fine for football, but the ground was greasy consequent on the recent heavy rains. In the Championship matches, Poneke beat Melrose by four points (a goal and a try) to nil. The Athletics beat Wellington by three points (a potted goal) to one point. In the Junior Cup match, Sfc Patrick's College Fifteen beat theßival Second by twenty-three points to nil. Union Second beat the Athletics Second by a try to nil.
