SPRINGFIELD.
Eain, which up till Friday night had for a couple of days previously been falling lightly at intervals, commenced then in earnest. Since that time up till this (Saturday) afternoon it has simply poured incessantly. The main road between Springfield and Sheffield is partly under water, culverts being qnite inadequate to take the quantity. It runs in considerable volume on both sides of the road, and here and there (particularly in the neighbourhood of the Annat Hotel), it gets dammed up, forming miniature , lakeß. No word as yet of any serious damage. The West Coast coach has not, at the closing of the mail, put in an appearance. Millikin and Company's waggons purposed starting on Saturday for the Bealey, with tents, tools, &c, for a contingent of men, who are shortly expected up from Christchurch to repair the road in the Bealey river bed. The waggons will not be able to make a move until the weather takes up.
