LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL.
Thursday, August 9. The Council assembled at 2.30 p.m. NAVAL AND MILITARY SETTLERS. The Hon E. C. J. Stevens moved the third reading of the Naval and Military Settlers and Volunteers Land Bill. The Hon G-. M. Waterhottse moved as an amendment that the Bill be laid aside. Had it been competent to have amended , the measure, he would have moved in that direction, but as it was a money Bill, and it had been ruled that it could not bo amended, he had no alternative but to move hia amendment in the present shape. The Attorney-General pointed out that if the Bill was laid aside it would not pnt an end to many of the claims. The Council divided on the question, that the words proposed to be omitted stand part of the question. Ayeß, 17 ; Noes, 13. BILLS FORWARDED. The Slaughterhouses Act Amendment Bill waa committed, and reported with verbal amendments. The Local Courts Proceedings Bill was read a second time. The Council rose at 5 p.m. EVENING SJITING. The Council resumed at 7.30 p.m. BILLS PASSED. The following Bills were finally passed : — Kaiapoi Drillshed; Timaru Harbour Board Loan Act, 1885, Amendment; and Ngaruawahia Cemetery Eeserve Leasing. The Council rose at 0 p.m.
