Athletic Notes.

j C. H. Sherrill, of Yale College, U.S., ran three trial heats at Hamilton Park, New Haven, Ct., oil June 15, and broke two American-amateur records and tied another. Ho supplants records made by L. E. Myers and H. Brooks, and ties a record by W. Baker, Haiv&rd's late champion. The first trial was at 250 yds, with timers at 220 yds and the finish. He covered the 220 yds in 224 sec, and the 250 yds in 25-Jsec, the latter time displacing Myers' record, 26seo, for that distance. The second trial was At 150 yds, with watches at 125 yds and the finish. In this heat ho secured two records, doing "the 125ydfi hi 12£soc, tieing Baker's record and finishing in even time, lasee, euxipJanting 1 Brooks' record o£ 15£ sec. la the third trial he did the 220 in 22£ and the 250 in 26sec, just equal to Myer's championship record. The distances and times were carefully verified. The Inter-collegiate Championships were decided at the Manhattan Grounds, NewYork, on May 26, in unfavourable weather. The meeting is looked upon as the great athletic gathering of the year, as nearly J all tbe colleges send representatives, and ] the rivalry is very keen. That between the representatives of Harvard and Yale is carried to the greatest length. This year, as in many others, Harvard carried off the honoms. C. H. Sherrill, of Yale, won the 100 and 220 Yards Eaces, and had the day been at all propitious, he would have beaten at least one record. The 100 yards waß run on a track partly covered with water • in 10§sec. The 220 was run in 22|sec. The Broad Jump was' won by T. Or. Sherman, of Yale, with 20ft Sin. He also took tie prize for Pole Vaulting, clearing 9ft 6in-. The Quarter-mile rraa was captured by S. G. TV oils, of Harvard, in 52-j?sec ; a grand performance considering the state of the track. H. B. Miles, of Harvard, took the Half-mile in 2min 2-*-sec. W. Hanner, of Yale, won the mile, run in 4min 37£ sec. The 120 Yards Hurdle Race was won by H. i Mapcs, in I7|aeo; and G. S. Mandell, Harvard, won the 220 Yards Hurdle Race in 2Gi«£c. Tbe Two-mile Bicycle Race ; was taken by ]{■. H. D*Tie, of Harvard, !in 7niin 2^ecw. J. J. Browse*, cf the i University of Pennsylvania, threw the- 161 b hammer 88ft 6£Ln, and took tha prize. K. Pennypacker, of Harvard, -won the shot putting with 37ft Bin. As stated in our last issue the running high jump, which was won by Webster, who beat the champion W. B. Page, was the Burpriae of the meeting.
