A telegram was received from tbe Government Insurance Department, approving .£2OOO loan for twenty years at five and a half per cent. Letter from HonE. Richardson, promising to do all possible to further railway openings petition. From Mr E. M. Wright, Ohoka, on the subject of the western drainage, as afrecting Baker's trustees. This letter was acknowledged, and Mr Wright informed that the matter ia now under the consideration of the Works Committee. From the Treasury, Wellington, advising payment of balance of subsidy, viz., _£23 3s 3d. From thfr Mandeville and Eangiora Boad Board, agreeing to contribute _S2O towards embankment. Accepted. From Mr Nalder, Borough Solicitor, covering opinion re procedure for recovery of rent of reserves. IN COMMITTEE. Tbe Council then went into Committee to consider the matters of their claim against the National Ho__tgage**and Agency Company,: also, to receive tenders for erection o_M_!ouncil Chambers. Oa resttming, tbe Committee reported : — That Mr Spackman take proceedings to recowes amoamts due from, the National Mortgage and Agency Company ; also that ■ especial meeting be held in«even days to rescind-?, resolution of July 24, relative to , prico- ot Council Chambers-ami to further CQnsidev tenderß for that "work. Report adopted. STANDING OBDEKS. Councillor Wearing moved suspension of Standing Orders, to enable a former resolution to be rescinded, and the matter of the tenders disposed of atonce. He- was tired of farther shilly-shallying or delay. He would be no party to further postpone-, ments. The Council were not unanimous in "T&vaav of suspension, and the motion was .lost. works. The Works Committee reported —1. Most of -the embankment contracts finished and passed, and all satisfactory. i*. That a culvert of not less than three feet be placed in Otaki street. Adopted. FINANCE Eeceipts £_2 18s 3d. debit balance .8828 Os 2d, accounts to .£2BO 18s lOd, were passed, and report adopted. ' ORDINARY. A motion by CounoiUoE Fraser that in future sureties be taken from contractors in place, of depoaita, waa lost.
