Sir James Hector's Little "Show."
The mare's fiest found by the JVew Zealand. Herald, was a splendid Baccess while it lasted. A3 a rule the evanescent joys of Euch a discovery are confined to the discoverer alone. A cold and unfeeling-world generally jeers alike at the ordinary mare's nest and its proud possessor. On this occasion the hig journalistic bow-wovr gave a deep-mouthed bay, and all the- little wee journalistic -deggiea in the Colony barked Xa. ty _up_.-fclretiio <___._>_- __s — "'Sir -T-unea _______ made an aw/wlmesß of our xQini-ig exhibita 1" Ot' course it would have been a serious matter, if true; though even then this spasmodic interest in the -mining industry might have caused the cynical to smile. Luckily it is not true. It was not. likely tobe. There iB not a man in- the Colony more intimately acquainted with every detail of its mining industries than Sir James Hector. Not a man in the Colony, and very few out of ib, have had a tithe of his experience in displaying his-atfcractkma and making the best of an advertisement. He was the last person likely to fail in showing the mining advantages of New Zealand in the most brilliant light. The declaration made by prompt meeting of the •_*<) Kew Zealand gentlemen in Melbourne, and our Commissioner's own telegram to the Government prove the mislea__ir.g nature of the telegram to the Herald, The canines, large and small, must keep their barking, at all events, until the "Show" iB fairly finished. Generous Mr Whiteford need not do the same with his proffered -CIOO. " The smallest contributions thankfully received" is the motto of our Government in these hard times.
