Australian Mail. — The Rotomahana reached the Bluff at 5.30 p.m. yesterday, and her mail should, therefore, reach Christchurch to-moirow night. toThe Sudden Death at Govebnob's Bay. — No inquest was held on the body of the lad Pope, who died at Governor's Bay suddenly on Friday, it being considered certain that his death was caused by diphtheria. The Bitter Cut. — Ekewhere will be found the outiine of a sermon preached last evening in the Durham street Wesleyan Church by the Rev W. J. Williams. Therein he had much that was practical to say in reference to this city. The Herd Laddie. — Mr Wy]lie arrived in Lyttelton from Akaroa on Saturday afternoon, and put up at tbe Canterbury Hotel a3 the guest of Mr Lane, the proprietor. In the evening be met several of the local champions, playing in all sixteen games and winning fifteen, tbe other being a draw, with Mr Nathan Neville, of Lyttelton. He remains with. Mr Lane until August 14, when he leaves for Melbourne. Papanui Jubilee Singers. — On Saturday night the choir of the Papanui Wesleyan Church gave their second performance of the song-3 of the Fisk Jubilee Singera at the Theatre Royal. There wa3 a large audience, -who weie evidently satisfied with the performance, as they applauded all the items, and encored several. Mr and Master Kelly gave some exceedingly good recitations during the evening. Bowling. — At the meeting: in Dunedin of the Committee of the New Zealand Bowling Association, letters were received from the Oamaru and Lawrenco Clubs, stating that they would be unable to nominate any players for the intercolonial match to be played in Melbourne. It "wna decided to request the Secretary to again write to the various Clubs in the Colony asking them to nominate players for the visit to Melbourne nexts November, and also to nominate delegates for the New Zealand Association. MtTTUAI. IMPROVEMENT ASSOCIATION.— At the meeting of the Association in connection with the United Methodist Free Church, St Asaph street, on Friday night, two short essays were given by Messrs Eobson and Rogers. Mr Robson's subject was "Modern Games and Sports," and that of Mr Rogers " When I was Young." Both essays provided plenty of matter for discussion. Next Friday evening has been set apart for a musical entertainment, for which an excellent programme has been prepared. 1.0.G.T. — The anniversary celebration of the Dawn of Peace Lodge, Ashburton, took place on Thursday evening, in the usual form of a tea and concert. The gathering was the most successful in the history of the Lodge, the tea being excellent, the concert exceptionally good, and the addresses stirring and eloquent. Mr Arthur (who occupied the chair) and Mr J. W. Sawle gave addresses, Misses Ray, Addis, Crane, Hicks and Howard, Mr and Mrs Gower, Mr and Miss Simmons, and Messrs Kneen, Mayo, Potter, Minnie and the Chairman gave soDga, recitations and music. La Crosse. — The usual Saturday afternoon match waß played in Hagley Park, when sides were picked by Messrs Boss and Cooke. The game, so far as throwing and picking up, was a good one, but the ten goals scored by Mr Boss* side against the eight by Mr Cooke's, again points to the inferiority of the goal keeping amongst the local players and the necessity for hard practice at this point in the field, if the Canterbury team are to hold their own in the proposed game with the Dunedin La Cross© Club. Of those who were playing on Saturday, Messrs Ross, Harman, Heaton Rhodes, Mannering, and Cooke seemed to have profited nio3t by the season's experiences. Presentation of a Football Banner. — The Canterbury College hall was the scene of a pleasant little ceremonial on Saturday afternoon, on the occasion of the presentation of a football banner by Mrs : Wilson, on behalf of the ladies of the College, to the Captain of the Canterbury ' College Football Club. The banner is a \ handsome one of maroon satin, with the monogram of the Club worked on one side in gold. The other side is at present j plain, but it is intended to work the arms of the College upon it. There was a large attendance, both of the members of the Football Club and of the ladies. Mrs , Wilson, with a few appropriate remarks, \ presented the banner, wishing the Club , every success.
