CITY COUCIL.

An ordinary meeting of the Christchurch City Council wa3 held at 7 p.m. yesterday ; present — Councillors Hulbert, Crooks, Manning, Prudhoe, Reese, Gray, M'Laren, Bishop, Tait, and Scott. An apology was made for the absence of Councillor Goss, who has been ill. In the absence of His Worship the Mayor, Councillor Hulbert; wa3 voted to the chair, and stated that a telegram hadbeeil received stating that the Government had appointed His "Worship one of the Commissioners for the Colony to the Melbourne Exhibition. . FINANCE. Items of finance were reported as follows : —Debit balance at Bank, £3227 17a Id. Receipts since last meeting : — General aacount, J81474 19a lid ; cemetery account, £7 18s ; suspense account, .£43 93 3d; interest account, £QG 5s lOd. Expenditure -. General account, JE447 15s 6d; interest account, i23OQ ; suspense account, £1. The accounts were passed. LICHFIELD 6T»EEI' FIRE BEIGADB STATION. A petition was read from merchants, tradesmen, and citizens of the South- ■ western part of the city, praying the J Council to re-open the old Lichfield Street Flro Brigade Station, and placing therein a portion of the plant of the brigade. The petition pointed out that a new chemical engine was expected from England shortly, and that there was no convenient place where it could be lodged. The petition was referred to the Fire Brigade Committee to report. BEPOBTS. The City Surveyor presented the following report : — " 1. The Lighting Committee, in conjunction with tbe Special Lighting Committee, opened the tenders for lighting Christchurch with electricity, but as the tenders are far higher than can be considered within the Council's means, they do not recommend the Council to adopt the system at present. 2. The By-law Committee, on receiving ipy report on the projected skating rink in High street, under Messrs Simpson and Williams' premises, came to the conclusion that the license ought not to be granted on account of the insufficient rmans of ingress." The report was approved. j The Reserves Committee reported that having considered the application of Mr J. M'Lean, referred to it to consider and report, for a reduction in the rent paid by him for his boatshed site, it could not recommend the Council to aceedo to the [ request. The report was approved. It was deoided to hold a special meeting of tho Council at 6.45 p.m. on the next ordinary meeting day, to consider the propriety oi. taking over Avon street and Willow street. Councillor Bishop said that an anonymous letter had appeared in the columns of one of the local papers, asserting that in many cases meat was sold in and about Chrisfcchurch for food purposes, which was quite unfit for such purposes. He would not have moved in the matter had he not been told the same himself. He would propose— "That the question of the fnspection of the meat supply of the city be referred to the Sanitary Committee to report." Councillor Prudboe seconded the motioa, which waa agreed to. Councillor Gray moved— "That Councillors Hulbert and Prudhoe be requested to act with tho Town Clerk in any emergency, in the place of his Worship the Mayor, dnrinp the absence of hia Worshio in Melbourne."
