Manufacture of Locomotives. In connection with the recent offer made by the Government for' the manufacture o£ locomotives within the Colony, the local manufacturers intend to ask their workmen to consider the matter, as the work can only be taken up if the men will consent to a reduction of wage?. The ironmasters say they will accept the work if Government will increase the price to be paid for each locomotive from £3000 to .£3260 each, and that they will be content with a profit of 5 per cent. On a former occasion the men refused to agree to. a reduction in wages. I The New Hebrides Line. The , Union Company of Netr Zealand have entered into an agreement with the Government to run a steamer to the New Hebrides regularly. MELBOURNE, March 12. Local Option: Wholesale Closing of Licensed Houses. Under the new Licensing Act the residents in the port of Melbourne have demanded a poll to determine the number* of licenses to be granted by the local Licensing Bench. The poll was taken on Saturday, with the result that by a majority of eighty the residents declared that the number of hotels should be reduced by cne-K|ilf. BRISBANE, March 12. > . Disease Among Horses. The disease among horses which recently appeared in different parts of the Colony is pronounced to be merely due to heat and damp, and it is not contagious.
