RANGIORA BOROUGH COUNCIL.
* Special Meeting. Tiie Jubilee Well. A special meeting of the above Council was held at the Municipal Chambers, Perceval street, last evening, to consider a request from the Jubilee Artesian Well Committee, that the Council take over the well, and make the future sinking of the Baine a Borough work ; present — His Worship the Mayor (Mr H. . Blackett), and Councillors Stevens, Gulliver, Keir, and Jennings. A letter was read from the Well Committee, explaining their position both monetary and otherwise, in respect to the work of sinking the well, and asking the Council to relieve them from further liability by taking over the well. A statement of finances In connection with the work accompanied the letter., showing that the receipts from tbe Jubilee Celebration and subscriptions amounted to .£152 13s sd, and the expenditure and liabilities to ,£234 12s 9d. Against the debit of .£Bl 19s 4d were placed Assets to the value of .£96 33. On the motion of Councillor Jennings., seconded by Councillor Gulliver, it was unanimously resolved to take over the well on the terms of the Committee's letter, provided that in future it ba looked upon as a Borough improvement, and not as a Jubilee Memorial, seeing that the expenditure of Borough funds on Jubilee commemorative works is illegal. A petition from over a hundred ratepayers was laid on the table asking that a special rate be levied to provide the requisite funds for carrying on the work of sinking the pipe. After a short discussion respscting the providing of funds for the work, it was agreed to continue the sinking of. the pipe for the current week, and to leave it for the ordinary meeting of the Council' on Friday night to decide whether the funds shall be raised by a special rate oi* by an increase in the next general rate. The Mayor agreed to superintend the work until the end of the week, and the Council then adjourned.
