SYDENHAM BOROUGH COUNCIL.

.The, ordinary meeting of - the above' Council was held last evening j presenfc--His Worship the Mayor (in the chair), Councillors Jacques, Muffett, White, T. E. Taylor, Booth, Bowden, and GfledhiU. , An apology was received from Councillor Langdown, on. account of illness. Leave of absence was granted to Councillor E. JI. Taylor during tW session of 1 Parliament. CORRESPONDENCE. Correspondence was read :— Prom owners and occupiers of property in Dewsbury lane or Little Quean's street, asking the Council to take the necessary steps for constituting the said street a public street. Held over until consideration of Works Teport. WOBKS COMMITTEE'S REPORT. The Works Committee reported as follows:—"The present contract for scavengering the Borough expires with tho current year. It is, therefore, necessary to make fresh arrangements for continuing the work, and the Committee wishes the Council to decide whether the present system shall be continued, or whether the scavengering shall be made compulsory, either throughout the Borough, or in such parts of the Borough as the Council shall think fit. "Under Section 29S of the present Municipal Corporations Act, the Council can levy a separate rate not exceeding 3d in the £ to pay for the work,, and the Committee thinks that the method of payment might be provided for in alternate ways in the new contract. Section No. 300 of the present Municipal Corporations Act renders it necessary for persons who wish to bury night-soil in their gardens as hitherto, to obtain the permission of the Council to do so, and the Committee recommends that persons who wish to dispose of the night-soil in that manner be requested te make application at once, The Committee has asked the Spreydon Eoad Board if it will pay onehalf of the cost of erecting and lighting the lamp petitioned for by the residents at the corner of Strickland street and Crescent road. The Committee recommends that the lamp now at the Waltham road railway croasing be removed to the corner of the Waltham road and the South Belt. The question of opening up streets through Mr Aynsley's land is being considered by the Committee who are making enquiries into the matter, and hope to be able to report at next meeting. The Committee has inspected Dewsbury lane, with a view to its being taken over as a public road, and have asked tiie Foreman of Works to make an estimate of the cost of the works necessary to enable the Council to make the street a public one." The report was dealt with clause by clause, and adopted. The petition from ratepayers in Dewsbury lane was received. FINANCE.. The Finance Committee reported as follows :—" Eeceipts for the fortnight, .£224 10s ; accounts recommended for payment, .£402 7s lid; debit balance at bank (current and loan accounts), J2G35 ls 4d ; credit balance (interest, Drainage Board, deposits, and Waimakariri Board accounts) .£341 2s 3 fixed deposit, .£IO,OOO. The Committee recommended that Mr McAllister be informed that the Council does not admit his claim of .£2O for compensation for land taken from his property to widen Andrew street, but that the Council is prepared to pay the sum of JCIS in lieu of the amount claimed." The report was received and adopted. The Council then adjourned.
