A MESSAGE FROM THE SEA.

[By TELEGRA.PH.J ! [jTROir OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.! (Per 6.8. Tarawera, at the Bluff.) INVEECARGILL, Sept. 2G. The Perth (W.A.) correspondent of the Melbourne Age telegraphed on Sept. 19 that an albatross dropped dead on Sunday on tUe beach at Fremantle. On being inspected the bird was found to have a tin band round its neck, with the following message in French punctured upon it : — " Thirteen shipwrecked have taken, refuge on the Crozet Islands, -Ith August, 1587." The band was rusted, and the authenticity of fcbe record is undoubted. Ifcia believed cere that the albatross was one of several birds sent away with messages as a forlorn hope by the survivors of a shipwreck. Many wrecks have taken place off the islands, one of the most notable being that of the Strathmore in 1875.
