DECLARATION OF THE POLL.

Christchurcli North. At noon to-day, in the old Provincial Council Chambers, there was an attendance oE about two hundred electors at the declaration of the poll by the BeturningOfficer (&. L. Lee, Esq.), who announced the numbers aa below, and declared Sir .Tulins Yogel elected. Beßult : — Sir Julius Yogel 749 Mr H. Boberts 256 Majority for Yogel ... 493 Tbo announcement wsb received with applause. Mr J. Gapbs, senr., on behaif of Sir Julius Yogel, rose to thank the electors, and read a telegram from Sir Julius acknowledging the honour conferred, and expressing hearty wishes for the welfare of Canterbury and the Colony at large. Mr Gapes further stated that the hen gentlemen would probably address the electors through the columns of the Press. Mr H. Eoberts thanked the electors [i or the proud place which he occupied, as ho considered that he had scored a great and grand victory/ when the position, ability, and influence of Sir Juliua Yogel (whom he deemed one of the greatest and best men in the Colony) was taken into account. He (Mr Boberts) and his party had been most scandalously treated by men who had gone into their camp, secured their secrets, and then, made them known to the Opposition. On his behalf there had been no Vehicles, and no paid canvassers, all the work had been voluntary, and thus he claimed that he had scored a grand victory. He had been told that he was too illiterate and insignificant to stand for such a constituency, but at any future election, if there was a difficulty in getting a candidate, he would again contest the seat. If the money and influence had been at his back which Sir Julius' friends had used the result would have been reversed. A vote of thanks to the Returning Officerwas proposed by Mr' Boberts, seconded by Mr Gapes, and carried by acclamation.
