Rangiora Rifle Volunteers.

GENERAL MEETING.

A general meeting of members of the above Corp3 was held at the Junction Hotel, Eangiora.last night, to electa Captain in the place of the late Captain Gordon, and also two Lieutenants. There was an attendance of twenty-seven, Lieutenant Fulton presiding.

The Chairman having stated the business of the meeting, Colour-Sergeant Shiel moved — "That Lieutenant Fulton be elected Captain of the Corps." This was seconded by Corporal Parker, and carried unanimously with hearty applause. Lieutenant Fulton in returning thanks said that while esteeming his election as a great compliment, he felt the deepest regret that the necessity had arisen for the appointment of a new Captain. He wa3 quite sure that his best efforts would fall far short of the service rendered the Company by the late Captain Gordon. That gentleman's heart and soul was in the Volunteer movement ; and the welfare of his men occupied his attention day and night. He (Lieutenant Fulton) would do his best to fill hig po3fc to their satisfaction. He felt confident of their sympathy and support; and hoped that they would show their interest in their corps by regular attendance, and attention at drill. He was pleased at being able to state that an orderly-room had been acquired, and would be opened shortly with a social gathering. The room woald be at the disposal of the members of the Company at any time, and he believed that their meeting together would have the effect of uniting them more closely in the bond of goodfellowship. In conclusion he could only say that he heartily thanked them for the honour they had conferred upon him, and that he would do his best to make himself worthy of their confidence. (Applause.) The Chairman here mentioned that Serjeant Helmore desired him to apologise for his unavoidable absence from the meeting. . On the motion of Private F. Humphries, seconded by Private M'Kay — " Sergeant Helmore was unanimously elected to the senior lieutenancy, rendered vacant by Lieutenant Fulton's promotion; and Mr Borrowman was afterwards elected to the office of junior lieutenant, which Lieutenant Higgins' resignation had rendered vacant.

The Chairman {statedj that the Hon E. Richardson had promised to interest himself in the direction of getting the Company permission to erect a drillshed at the south end of the Post-office section; and that there were ladies willing to assist in arranging a bazaar to provide a portion of the funds required to put up the building. Colour-Sergeant Shiel mentioned that Captain Fulton had very kindly presented a book entitled " Heroes and Defenders of New Zealand" to the Company, as a nucleus of a library. Captain Fulton waa heartily thanked for his present.

A subscription list in aid of a fund for erecting a memorial to the late Captain Gordon was handed round, and met with a liberal reception.

Sergeant Jones, and Privates Leech, d'Auvergne, and Humphries were elected to fill vacancies on the Committee of Management, and after t*>9 healths of the

newly-elected officers had been drunk, the meeting terminated.
