Proposals for the 1888

Meeting.

WANGANUI, July 30.

Captain Sommerville, of the New Zealand Rifle Association, is Bending out a circular to members of the Association, containing suggestions for the 1888 meeting. They are as follows : — That the programme shall be divided into two stages, the first to consist of eight matches, somewhat similar to last year's programme, up to and including 600 yards 1 range j aggregate prizes to be awarded to the four highest in the stage, as follows : — Silver medal and «S2O j silver cross and JBIO $ silver cross and £7; silver cross and £5. In the second stage, which is to be open only to the fifty highest aggregate in the first stage, there will be one match at ranges 700, 800, 900 yards, ten shots, at each, and a.final match for the championship, open only to the twenty highest; the grand aggregate scores of the last match to be added to the first stage, ten shots at 1000 yards. Prizes, aggregate, gold medal and ; gold star and .£3O ; gold star and .£2O, ,£lO, and £5.

The other suggestions are that all but the two matches in the first stage, restricted to Volunteers, shall be open to all comers, and that in these two matches Volunteers shall fire in drill order j but in all others they must fire in plain clothes. That a Consolation be added to the programme, and a team programme provided for, to be fired by twenty men teams, one from each Volunteer district. As to the Champion Belt, it is suggested that a new belt be procured, and that the clasps of the old belts form part of the fittings of the new belt ; that a shield be added to each of the old belts, -with the names of pasb winners, and particulars of the cause which led to the belts being withdrawn from competition; and that the old belts be fired for by past winners only, under such conditions as the Council may think necessary.
