The Hau Hau Fanatics.

[Bt Telegraph.] [fbom otjb own corrbppondent.] WELLINGTON, July 27. Mr H. W. Bishop, E.M. of Mongonui, has -telegraphed the following offieiaP report upon ,the late Native 'disturbance to the}Nativ©lMinister*: — ".Whangaroa, July Jj7--0n Saturday, at Rawene, I o'ealt with the Native prisoners. Two were remanded tfntil they recovered from' "their wounds, three I discharged as having taken no active part in breaking the law, and the rest I sentenced in various ways for assault Upon Hearn and resisting the pdice. In most of the cases I' ordered the prisoners to find oureties for their good future behaviour. Hohaia Pahione, a nephew of Tamato, Waka Nene was among those arrested, and upon his promising me to give up the foolish practices in future, I released him upon two respeotable Natives becoming surety to* his good behaviour. Five of the women were dealt with in a similar manner. I deemed it best to deal with all the oharges summarily under the circum- < stances, and Inspector M'Govern, on behalf of the .police, quite concurred in the view. The ringleaUers have been severely punished, the strong arm cf the law has been upheld", the fanatical movement has been rooted out, and the Natives all around have -Keen taught a lesson' they are not likely to forget. At the same time, justicehas been tempered with meroy to those who have simply- been the fanatical followers of designing rogues. On my wayJiere, I-in-terviewed a woman named Ana-Karo, who has been carrying on a movement of -her own for some time, which has much disturbed and upsst the-Natiuesof the distriot. She gave me'' a distinct promise, in the presence of a large concourse of Natives, that she would henceforth cease all such practices. This is very satisfactory, the wopjided 1 prisoners are progressing wall." '• "•'■ •
