TASMANIA.
The Financial Statement shows a present deficiency of £76,000, and a probable deficiency at the end of the financial year of J816,40Q. To meet this it is proposed to impose additional taxation to the extent !of £50,000, A Land tax based on capital value and an Income tax are also to be imposed. Interests on fixed deposits at the Bank are to be taxed, and there is to be a house tax and a poll tax on Chinese. Commercial travellers who visit Tasmania on business, are to be placed on the same footing as auctioneers and wine and spirit merchants, and to be charged a license fee of .£25 per year. The duty on opium is to be increased to 20a on the pound, and the duty on spirits is to be increased by 3a per gallon.
