THE RAILWAY ACCIDENT.
A Chasm 20ft Deep.
[SrKCIAL TO THE " StAK."]
TVANGANUI, Jult 27. The accident which occurred on the railway line at Bonny G-len wbb more serious than the railway authorities allowed to leak out at first. There is no doubt but that had the accident occurred at almoat any other part of the line in that vicinity, the consequences would have been serious. The place was just round a curve, and there was high ground at the other side of the slip. The driver, coming round the corner, saw that a slip had taken place, exposing a number of sleepers, and leaving a length or two of rail almoßt unsupported. With tho speed he had on the train, he could not stop, and he rushed over it. The engine got over all right, but the truoks and carriages were thrown off the line. The weight of tho engine caused a collapse of the made ground in the hollow, and into thi3 went two or three timber and firewood trucks. Tho passenger waggons fortunately ran aside on to high ground, and the guard's van did not leave the line. The chasm is about 20ft deep by 40ffc in length, and was caused by insufficient accommodation, for surface water, which lodged in the gully, there being only a Gin pips to take ib away.
