RANGIORA BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The fortnightly meeting of- this Council, postponed from Friday evening on account of the death of Councillor Gordon, was held lasj evening; present — His Worship the Mayor, Councillors Cone, Gulliver, Good, Manning, Luxton, and Jennings; THE LATE COUNCILLOR GORDON. Councillor Good thoughtthatbeforegoing into the business of the meeting it would only be right to express, and minute the high esteem entertained for the late Councillor Gordon, and the regret felt at his untimely decease. He moved a motion to that effect, which was seconded by Councillor Cone, and agreed to. CORRESPONDENCE. Prom the Town Clerk, Christchurch, in reply to an application for the six-inch well-sinking apparatus and pipes, stating that the tools were at present in use, and the City Council had no pipes to spare. The Mayor said the Artesian Well Sinking Committee were making other arrangements for the sinking of the well. Pr.-im the Kowai Road Board, agreeing to join the Council and the Mandeville and Bangiora Road Board in appealing against the R.M. Court decision rettie maintenance of the Ashley traffic bridge. The Mayor reported that since tbe receipt of the above letter the appeal case [ had been placed in the solicitor's hands.

From Mr J. E. March, in reply to an application from the Mayor for work for the unemployed of the Borough, stating that, he had communicated with the Inspector of Railway Permanent Ways, with a view of giving employment to the men.

It was reported that a number of the men had been found work on the Eyreton line.

Prom Mr John Luxton, strongly objecting to the decision of the Council to take the drain on the West Belb along the east side instead of the west side, as recommended in the Engineer's report. On the motion of Councillor Good, seconded by Councillor Gulliver, it was agreed to allow the matter to stand over until next meeting, to give time for further enquiry. The Mayor reported that he had seen Mr Molyneux, with respect to the obstruction to the water way Gauged by his bridge, and that he refused to allow the Council to put in the new bridge. ENCROACHMENT OP THE BIVER ASHLEY. His Worship also reported that Councillor Luxton and he had inspected the river bank, above Fernside, in company with Mr M'lntyre, of the Road Board, and they had unanimously arrived at a decision that something was required to be done to prevent the further encroachment of the river. Councillor Luxton endorsed the Mayor's statements, and after a short discussion it was agreed to defer the matter till the nest meeting for further consideration. ORDINARY BUBINBGS. Councillor Luxton moved — "That the old horse belonging to the Council be sold ; and that all extra carting work be let by contract." This was seconded by Councillor Manning and carried, the Mayor and Councillor Cone voting against. TENDERS. Nine tenders for cutting the fence around Maria Andrews Park were opened, and that of Hamilton and Winter, at od per chain, was accepted. Nine tenders were also received for screening gravel, and that of T. D. Nicholas, at Gd per yard, accepted. Councillor Luxton moved—" That tenders be invited for making and placing seven flood gates in the new drain from the West belt to Church street, and a bridge for the footway on the belt. This waa seconded by Councillor Good and agreed to. NOTICE OP MOTION. Councillor Manning gave notice of motion for the next meeting — " That the Council, if necessary, subsidise the amount collected for sinking the artesian well. The Council then adjourned.
