Obituaey.— By the death of Mrs J. Cowan, at Lyttelton on Friday last, Canterbury -was robbed of one of her earliest settlers. The late Mrs Cowan arrived in Lyttelton in the ship Sir George Pollock, m the year ISSI, and has resided in Lyttelton ever since. The deceased lady -was ever ready to lend a helping hand to any of her aeighboura in time of trouble. No wonder then, that she was liked and respected by all who came in contact with her, and her death was deeply regrettea by the large circle of friends she had made by her kind and obliging manner. Her reni&ins were interred in the Church of England Cemetery on Sunday last, tho service being conducted by the Eev E. Eliot Chambers, of Wesfc Lyttelton,
