-fiitt W«ek Mr A. J. Towsey gave another ot Ida Saturday-afternoon conceits, at 3 pan., at the rooms of the Young Men's Ghrißtian. Association. There was a good atiaience,arid these matinees are deservedly growing in popularity. The concert introduced ua to Airs F. M. Wallace, whose voice, a ; m«z2io-Boprano of wide range and good power; has been carefully cultivated. She sang, in the first part of the programme, Mozart's "Voi che sapete," from ''Nozzedi Figaro," and, though suffering htm a slight hoarseness, her rendering of the famous song was well received. Her second contribution vas Handel's celebrated " Angels evar Bright and Fair/ and was given with good dramatic effect, especially in the recitative. The number Traf heartily applauded, Mrs Wallace merely acknowledging the recall. Miss E. Buchanan, also new to Christchurch audiences, possesses a fresh musical mezzosoprano of good range and breadth, but as yet somewhat uncultivated. Her singing of Dolby'B " I Can Wait " was good, but PinßuftVpretty waltz song, " The Maiden's Challenge," lacked the neceßßary life. The nervousness which necessarily showed itself in this first performance will disappear with practioe,and Miss Buohanan's singing wUV become popular here. Mr Towsey. played a march '■ (op. 1£) by Moßzkowßki, and a polonaise (op. 12) by. Spharwenka, and sang Blumenihai'g ttassionafca song " Unsaid," and Hnautni favourite "Laßt Waton" in h|a customary finished manner, and waa well received in each number. The violin playtag of Mr F. M. Wallace was a real treat to the audience, and hia masterly playing of a sweet romance in F (Beethoven), a wild air and jig (old English), bb Richard Jones, in the first part of the programme, and in the second half a eonatOi by Beethoven, for piano and violin, comprising allegro, adagio, schetao, trio and rondo movemeAtSj the rythm of the allegro, tho dreamy melody of the adagio, and the very olever execution of che Bohezzo— a diffloalt piece of work— greatly pleaded those present, and Mr Wallace's ensured popularity in Chri&tohuroh is rapidly increasing* The next matinee is agnounood for Saturday next* at 3 o'olook.
