Dr Lynn, the well known magician, and his wife were passengers by ihe R.M.S.S. Aorangi, which left for L-ndon yesterday evening. Mr J. T. A'«ton, solicitor, of Lyttelton, was also a pati'enger by the same boat. An ordinary meeting oi me Philosophical Institute of Canterbury was held yesterday evening, when papers were read "On the Meaning and Etymology of the word • Dierectus ' in the Roman Dramatists," by Professor P. W. Haslam, M A., and "'On the Oxford Chalk Deposit," by H. Wilson, M.A. In accordance with the expressed wish of many parishioners of Addington, the incumbent of St Mary's Church has changed the time of evening service on Sundays from 7 o'clock to G. 30. This change of time will commence with next Sunday evening, when the service will be taken by one of the Bishop's chaplains, tbe Rev W. T. Winter. The Lower Heathcote Racing Club have decided to hold a trotting meeting on Wednesday, Juno 22, the day after the Lancaster Park Trotting Club's meeting. The added money will amount to close on .6200, and prizes will be given by the Club to the jockeyß winning the different races, consisting of saddles and bridles for the first and second jockeys, and whips and spurs for the third in each event. The weekly session of the Hope of Christchurch Lodge, 1.0. G.T., was held on Wednesday evening. The business of the Lodge was got through, and the doors were opened at 8 o'clock to admit the public, who very Boon availed themselves of all the seats and standing room in the hall. Taylor, engineer and blacksmith, of , Kaiapoi, for which he has recently obtained patents. One is an expansion barrow wheel, made entirely of iron, the principle of which is that if at any time the spokes should wear loose, a few turns of a nut sets the wheel up as taut as ever. The other is a Bmall hand tool used to fashion horse shoes, which- promises to completely revolutionise the manufacture of these useful articles. By one operation the holes are punched in the shoe and accurately countersunk to fit the nail heads, i thus doing away with the customary groove, and enabling the shoe to be made solid.
