SUTHERLAND'S DESCRIPTION OF THE COUNTRY.
[Special to thh " Stab."] Sutherland gives this description of the alleged new field : — From Darran Bangea to Martin's Bay and the coast line, there is a considerable extent of country available for pastoral and agricultural purposes. John O'Groat's Creek, about ten miles long, comes down from the low valley, bordered with terraces and table lands. It is an easy grade from the coast to a low saddle, 640 ft above Bea level, leading into Lake M'Kerrow, where a practicable road can easily be made. We resumed prospecting in March last. Now that the work can go steadily ahead, the prospectors count on making from £3 to £8 a week per man when they return. Other prospectors would find plenty of water available. The ground is loose and Bhingly, with no clay. In Musket Bay there is a good landing place, but in fine weather it is possible to land on any part of the coast between Milford Sound and Martin's Bay. No persons have worked on the ground where the prospectors intend to start, but he believes they have been there. During twelve months only one party has been within two miles of them ; and that was a portion of the party by the Hinemoa. There are plenty of birds on the coast, including kiwis, kakapos, and woodhens. Blue mountain ducks and teal are also to be found. In the waj of fish there are to be found trumpeter, groper, mullet, and several other kinds. The country north of John O' Groats' xiver is good pastoral country.
