WELLINGTON GAS COMPANY. A NARROWLY ESCAPED COLLISION. i WELLINGTON, Fbb. 2. Armourer has been scratched for all engagements at the Racing Club's meeting. The annual meeting of the Gas Company was held to-day. The report and balancesheet were adopted, a dividend of 7£ per cent being declared. Mr J. Nancaraow was elected a Director. A resolution to increase the capital to £200,000 was carried. The Chairman stated that the plant for the newworks had arrived and would be ready for nee in Bix months. It is expected that before long the Company will be able to supply Wellington with gas at a rate much cheaper xhan in any other part of the Colony. I There was a narrow escape of a collision outside Palnierston yesterday. Just as the 1 morning train from Wanganui reached town, it was met by the outgoing train. Luckily neither was going at full speed, and a timely application of the brakes brought them to a standstill within a chain or two of one another. The passengers had a good fright. There is an incline and a curve at the place, and the Palmeraton train was going up the former, which helped to lessen its speed.
