The Weather .

The rain began in the small konrs of Saturday with such energy as to cause fears of a repetition of the floods of three months ago. This was especially the case in the evening, when the downpour was heaviest. The water overflowed the Bidechannels in several places, hut no very serious flood occurred, and, the rain slackening towards morning, the drains proved quite equal to carrying off all the water that found ita way into them. A considerable proportion did not, however, and some of the streets were thus reduced to a state of most unpleasant sloppiness. The weather yesterday was very nearly a repetition of that of Saturday, save that the rain was not quite so heavy and continuous. The river Avon rose nearly 18in, overflowing its banks where they are very low, as at Hereford street bridge, the Hospital grounds, and at one place in the Public Gardens. Dudley Creek rose several feet, and the paddocks around Richmond, Windsor, and Locksley were flooded in several places, the lower portions being transformed into miniature lakes. The Heathcote rose, it is stated, 4ft, and at high tide yesterday, the water came over the bank at Radley bridge. ! The low lying paddocks in the neigh- 1 bourhood of Papauui were flooded to some extent, especially in the vicinity of May's road. The Papanui road was not flooded with the exception of one of the footpaths, where some attention is required to the side channels, and the path needs raising. Further north, Scotch hill and Homer's swamp were more or less inundated, a large body of water lodging there. The following is the rainfall record for August to date, as supplied by Mr J..8.
