Fires.
♦ The electric fire alarm annunciators at the fire brigade and police stations rang an alarm at five minutes past 8 o'clock on Saturday night. The engines turned out, but no sign of any fire could be discovered, no number was recorded, and none of the boxes were found broken. The alarm was probably caused by a wet branch being blown across the wires. On Wednesday afternoon last Mr Has well, auctioneer, of Kaikoura, when removing some goods from the store of Messrs Marlow and Rogers, in that township, found that an attempt had apparently been made to burn, down the building. A case filled with ginger ale bottles packed in straw had been placed against a partition, the straw saturated with kerosene, and set on fire. A considerable portion of the partition had been burned, but the flames had evidently gone out before they got sufficient hold to consume the building. Marlow and Eogers became bankrupt about a fortnight ago, and since then the store has been in the care of Mr Has well, for the Official Assignee, and has been locked up. It is stated that the stock was insured for .£l5O.
