RAILWAY LEAGUE MEETING ATI KAIAPOI.

♦ ' A meeting was held in the Council Chambers, Kaiapoi, on Tuesday night, at which the Mayor (Mr R. Moore) presided. In his opening remarks the Chairman pointed out the desirability of forming local Committees, whose duties would be to enrol members, collect subscriptions, and induce everyone who was entitled to a vote to register the same. Forms of registration would be supplied to members of the Comu.ittee free of charge. The Railway League were issuing a pamphlet, the expense of printing which would be about £100, but the information contained in it was invaluable. The League were also . making arrangements to send able lecturers to all centres of population. Those ; expenses would probably be another .£2OO, which would have to be provided for \ by subscriptions. The subscription of | 2s 6d entitles a member to one . of the medals issued by the League, ' which forms a handsome pendant for the watch chain, and being in a prominent position, keeps him always in mind of the great interests it represents. For an object ' of this kind everyone should unite, and ! insist on their right to have the railway. 1 If this was done the Government must give 1 it to us. If the Canterbury, Westland and ! Nelson members united, no Government " opposing their policy could stand. ' Those present then formed themselves ■ into a Committee. On the motion of Mr E. Smethurst, \ seconded by Mr John Sims, Mr R. H. . Mathews was elected Secretary, and it was [ j resolved to call another meeting at an . j early date.
