St Albans Borough Council.

, A special meeting of this Council was , held last evening for the purpose of con- , sidering what items in the new Government assessment of rateable property in the Borough should be objected *to on the ground that the value was assessed too iow. His Worship the Mayor, Councillors Milsom, Neate, Brown and Salter were • present. j The Mayor submitted a list which had ' ' been prepared by the Committee appointed ! for the purpose, and from which it appeared that 51 items were objected to. The total value of the properties, according to the assessment roll, was .£71,212, and the value, in the opinion of the Committee, should be .£90,580, the difference between ■ these two sums, .£19,668, being the'amount which the Committee considered the j Council had, for rating purposes, been de- | prived of under the Government assess- ! ment. This meant a loss of about i>6l in rates. After a short discussion, during which one or two trifling amendments were made, the report of the Committee was adopted, and it was resolved that the necessary objections should be forwarded to the Property-tax Commissioner. The Town Clerk was appointed to attend the Court of Eeviewers, to prosecute the appeal against the valuations on behalf of the Council. This was all the business. Although Councillor Brown has resigned, he retains office till his successor is appointed ; hence his attendance at the meeting. Mr Frank Smith has been nominated for the vacancy. Nominations close on Friday next.
