The Auckland Unemployed.

» [Peb Pbess Association.] AUCKLAND, Dec. 4. A public meeting, to consider the case of the unemployed, was held to-night in the Temperance Hall ; the Mayor in the chair. There was a crowded attendance, but a good number were not unemployed. A resolution was carried in favour of sending a petition to Government explaining the distress, and asking them, through the Minister of Public Works, to supply labour for those in need, as has been done in similar cases at Christchurch and Dunedin. A petition iBto be sent, also, to the City Council and Harbour Board. Resolutions in favour of prohibiting the importation of goods which could be manufactured here, and of prohibiting assisted immigration, male or female, were negatived. The names of 150 men, principally married, were given in at the meeting as out of employment, and Messrs Peacock and Moss, M.H.R.'s, addressed the meeting, promising to aid in representing the matter to Government. Mr Thomas Walker, of Sydney, spoke in deprecation of the threatened appeal to the New South Wales Government for assistance, as matters in Sydney were no better than in New Zealand.
