♦ CHRISTCHURCH NORTH-EAST. The quarterly meeting of the Licensing Committee for the Christchurch Northeast District was held at the City Council Chambers at noon to-day ; present — Mr J. Anderson (Chairman), Messrs R. Westenra, R. Struthers, and J. P. Jameson. The principal business dealt with was the consideration of plans for new buildings in respect, of two hotels, licenses to which had been granted at last annual meeting on condition that the old structures were replaced by more suitable buildings. Market Hotel. — H. Haddrell, licensee. Mr Bruges submitted plans for a new hotel, which, were approved by the Committee ; and he undertook that the building should be finished by the next annual meeting in June, 1885. Victorian Hotel. — Patrick Burke, licensee. Mr C. Money, the owner of the property, submitted plans of a new building, of which the Committee expressed their approval. The license was continued on the underI standing that the foundations of the new ! hotel were laid before the March meeting of the Committee. Golden Fleece Hotel. — A. H. Hardecke, licensee. Mr Stringer applied to the Committee for permission to re-open a door on the Armagh street frontage of the hotel. The Chairman said the door had been closed in consequence of representations by the police that a nuisance was occasioned ;thr.ough women congregating around it. ; Inspector Pender said that the police did not wish to be oppressive or hard on any particular licensee, but if this door was reopened, he did not see why other side ; entrances, as that at the Palace Hotel, ' which had been closed by the Committee as- objectionable, should not be reopened. He could not recommend .Mr Stringer's application. j Mr Stringer called Mr J. Parry, plumber, l who had lived in Armagh street, adjoining the hotel for some years. He stated that he had never noticed 'any special nuisance when the door referred to was open. If it was reopened it might be a convenience to passengers waiting for the Avonside omnibus, which stopped opposite to it. The Chairman said the Committee could, not see their way to grant the application.. The Committee then adjourned.
