L yttelton Lumpers' Union Picnic.

+ This Union held the first of what will probably become a series of annual picnics in the Heathcote Valley, near the Railway station, yesterday. Every arrangement had been made to conduce to a successful day's pleasure, but unfortunately the day broke dull and threatening, with a cold easterly wind, and this no doubt lessened the enjoyment of the holiday-makers. A special train was chartered to and from the Valley, and conveyed about 500 persons to the scene. The Orphanage Band was in attendance, and played capital music, under' Mr Ritchie's superintendence. The picnicers, after due consideration, decided to cater for themselves. Sports of all kinds were got off during the day, including races of all descriptions, for all classes of competitors, and for good prizes. The events were keenly contested. A refreshment booth was erected on the ground under the superintendence of Mr. J. H. Schmidt, of the Railway hotel. As a finish to the day's sport, a social gathering which was largely patronised, was held in the Oddfellows' Hall, where dancing was kept up till an early hour. The following are the prize winners in the principal events : — Obstacle Race — H. Bray, 1. Men's Race, 240 yards — T. Campbell, 1 ; C. Fitzsimmons, 2. Men's Race, over 45 years — P. Enlum, 1; D. Stewart, 2. Three Long Jumps — P. Macguire, 1 ; J. Maddon, 2. Hurdle Race— H. M'Clatchie, 1; P. Macquire, 2.
